Kansas City Senior Session | Grace

When Grace and her mom, Heidi, contacted me about her senior photoshoot, I knew immediately that it was going to be completely one-of-a-kind. Grace wanted to do a combination of photos in her senior hoodie for a casual look, and then change into her dress for a more vintage-style shoot.

This immediately got my creativity flowing, and I started brainstorming location ideas to make this happen for her. I came up with a couple of out of the box ideas, and I have to be honest. I was a little nervous to suggest them to Grace! She might have thought I was crazy!

Luckily, she was totally on board and willing to go along with my crazy ideas, and I think we nailed it!

We started out across the street from Union Station, at the base of the World War I Memorial. This is one of my favorite places to shoot to get that iconic KC skyline in the background.

Then, we ran over quickly to The Link at Union Station for a few more shots. I love the stopping by this spot whenever I’m shooting around downtown KC to add some variety to a gallery. The long corridor of windows, along with all of the different lines, make for some cool shots!

Next, we zipped over to the Twin Drive In in Independence. This was a total crap-shoot, because I had no idea if the marquee would be lit-up, or what kind of random movie titles would be listed. We lucked out with the south side of the sign being blank, and everything lit up perfectly!

I used to be insanely intimidated by shooting at night, but after years of studying and practicing off-camera-flash, its now it’s my absolute favorite thing to do. It really makes your images stand out, and sets them apart from what you normally see.

Last stop was where things really got interesting. Steak and Shake in Liberty, MO. I had called ahead and spoke to the manager who agreed to let us set up inside the restaurant at 9:00PM. This really exuded that vintage/retro vibe we were going for. You’d never know it, but the place was full of customers at the time!

In our pre-consultation, I asked Grace to describe herself in 3 words. She chose creative, sensitive and attentive. I totally agree! Those attributes will serve you well as you head to college, and in your future career as a teacher. Thanks again Grace! I’ll never forget the fun we had during your session (or all of the stares we got - haha!) I wish you the best!
